History
History of the Palm Jumeirah Monorail
Planned into Palm Jumeirah from the outset, the monorail gave the island its own elevated public transport spine, chosen to keep the Palm's road network clear as it grew into one of Dubai's most recognisable residential and hospitality addresses.
2006
Construction begins
Work starts on the elevated straddle-beam line, built to give the fast-growing island a dedicated car-free link to the mainland.
30 April 2009
Official opening
The line opens as the first monorail in the Middle East, running from Palm Gateway at the trunk out to Atlantis on the crescent.
3 July 2017
Al Ittihad Park station opens
A new stop at Al Ittihad Park is added midway along the route, opening access to the Golden Mile and the island's residential core.
November 2019
Palm Jumeirah Mall station opens
The station later known as Palm Jumeirah Mall, renamed from Nakheel Mall, opens beside The Palm Tower and The View at the Palm.
March 2024
Ownership moves to Dubai Holding
Nakheel, the Palm's developer, is folded into Dubai Holding, placing the monorail under Dubai Holding Asset Management.
2026
Maintenance closure and reopening
The line pauses in January 2026 for essential station maintenance and returns to service in July 2026, restoring the island's only rail connection.
