History
History of the Dubai Tram
Planned as the Al Sufouh Tram to serve Dubai's fast growing coastal communities, the line introduced several world firsts for a surface tramway and became a key feeder into the wider metro network along the Marina and JBR corridor.
2008
Al Sufouh Tram project awarded
The RTA selects a consortium of Alstom, Besix, and Parsons to design and build a modern tramway along the Al Sufouh Road corridor, using catenary free ground level power.
2013
First Citadis tram unveiled
The first of 11 Alstom Citadis 402 trams is presented before delivery to Dubai, ahead of testing on the completed depot and line.
November 2014
Passenger service begins
The tram is inaugurated on 11 November 2014 and opens for public service the next day, the first tramway in the Gulf and the first outside Europe to use Alstom's catenary free power supply, with platform screen doors at every station.
2021
Keolis-MHI takes over operations
Operation and maintenance of the tram passes to Keolis-MHI under the same network contract that covers the Dubai Metro, aligning the tram with the rest of the rail system.
