History

About Palm Jumeirah Monorail

The Palm Jumeirah Monorail was conceived as part of the original master plan for Palm Jumeirah, designed to provide a dedicated public transport link between the artificial island and mainland Dubai. As the Palm developed into a high density residential and tourism destination, a grade separated rail system was chosen to minimize road congestion and preserve the island’s urban layout.

Construction began in 2006 using straddle type monorail technology suitable for elevated coastal environments. The system was completed and officially opened to passengers in April 2009, becoming the first operational monorail in the Middle East. From its launch, the line connected the Palm Gateway area to Atlantis at the crescent, establishing a direct car free spine through the island.

Over time, additional stations were introduced to support new developments, including Al Ittihad Park and Nakheel Mall, reflecting the Palm’s evolution from a resort focused destination into a mixed use residential and lifestyle community. While originally planned for future integration with Dubai’s wider rail network, the monorail has remained a standalone system, continuing to serve as Palm Jumeirah’s primary internal rail connection.
