History

About Dubai Metro Green Line

The Dubai Metro Green Line was developed as the second phase of the Dubai Metro project to serve Dubai’s older, high-density districts, particularly Deira and Bur Dubai. Planning began in the mid-2000s under the supervision of Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, with the goal of reducing traffic congestion and improving public transport access in historic commercial areas.

Construction started in 2006 and involved a mix of underground tunneling beneath central Deira and elevated sections across eastern and western parts of the city. The Green Line officially opened on 9 September 2011, extending the Dubai Metro network beyond Sheikh Zayed Road and into Old Dubai. Two additional stations, Al Jadaf and Creek, were completed in 2014, finalizing the full route.

At launch, the Dubai Metro became the world’s longest fully automated, driverless metro system, highlighting Dubai’s commitment to advanced urban infrastructure. Today, the Green Line remains a vital link between heritage districts and modern transit, with its importance set to grow further through future metro expansions and redevelopment along Dubai Creek.
